This report documents the historic, archeological, and architectural data on Lock 38 of the Ohio and Erie Canal (Historic Structure 125) and provides recommendations for both its structural preservation and restoration that will support public use. The structure, locally known as the "locktender's house," entered into the National Park System when the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was established in 1974. At the time of the report, it was in a state of disrepair and required immediate attention to avoid the loss of additional historic fabric. The house has historic significance for interpretation of the Ohio and Erie Canal and architectural interest as a local adaptation of the Greek Revival style. The goal of the recommended treatment is to restore HS 125 to its exterior appearance circa the 1840s and to adaptability restore the building's interior for use as a visitor contact station and canal museum. The structure, along with lock 38, would contribute to the historic scene as it existed during the 1840-1860 period Photographs show the historical and existing (in 1984) conditions, interior and exterior. Maps, site plan, and measured drawings are also included.
