Historic Structure Report, Jaite Company Town, Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area
Adelman EH. 1986. Historic Structure Report, Jaite Company Town, Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
The Jaite Mill was incorporated by Charles H. Jaite on September 18, 1905, and soon afterwards the company town was developed. The mill and town is an example of the economic development and industrial growth of northeast Ohio, which had begun with the advent of the Ohio and Erie Canal in the early 1800s. In May of 1980, the town was acquired by the United States for inclusion in Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, and this area was identified in 1981 as the preferred location for a headquarters facility. This Historic Structure Report is a compilation of administrative data, historical research, and architectural documentation of the buildings in Jaite, which concludes with a detailed design proposal to adapt them to to serve as this headquarters facility. In 1979, the Jaite Mill Historic District was entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes the mill, railroad bridge, company store, duplexes, bungalows, and associated railroad structures. Initial research for this report was prepared in 1982, prior to the rehabilitation of the Jaite company town for the headquarters of Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Existing conditions drawings included in the appendices provide a description of the appearance, construction, and spatial arrangement of the buildings. Narrative sections describe features that are not evident in the drawings and provide clues to the history and development of the structures.
