Ohio and Erie Canal, Masonry and Concrete Structures, Historic Structure Report, Administrative Data Section, Architectural Data Section, Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area [DRAFT]

Oswick P. 1993. Ohio and Erie Canal, Masonry and Concrete Structures, Historic Structure Report, Administrative Data Section, Architectural Data Section, Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area [DRAFT]. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

The initial research for this report was published in August of 1984 as the "Historic Structure Report, Ohio and Erie Canal." That report provides an in-depth discussion of the evolution and impact of the canal. The intent of this document is to augment that 1984 report (referred to as the Historical Data Section of the Historic Structure Report) through the presentation of administrative and architectural data. The Ohio and Erie Canal was a 308-mile waterway that linked Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth. It provided a means of transportation to the interior of Ohio and was a catalyst for development of the Cuyahoga Valley. The Cuyahoga Valley reached the apex of its importance as a transportation conduit between 1827 and 1840. Competition from the proliferation of new canal routes, construction of Ohio's railroad system, and a 1913 flood contributed to the demise of the canal. A significant era of westward expansion and settlement in the United States history is still represented in the remaining canal structures and associated farms and settlements along the length of the valley. The Architectural Data Section is divided into two parts: the Watered Portion of the Canal, and the Unwatered Portion of the Canal. Each part is further divided into categories which represent structure types. The report includes a table of structures on the canal with corresponding Historic Structure or List of Classified Structures number and recommended treatment for each.
