Eastern Nearctic Rhyacophila Species, with Revision of the Ryacophila invaria Group (Trichoptera: Rhyacophilidae)

ABSTRACT: The Ryacophila invaria Group consists of 16 published species, of which the greatest number is found in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Relationships among these species have not been well resolved, nor is it certain that the 16 names given to the group represent accurately the number of species. A part of the difficulty in resolving the relationships and taxonomic status of these species is the incomplete knowledge of their characteristics, as the females and larvae of several species have not been associated. A new species of Ryacophila is described in the R. invaria Group. Females of seven published species of eastern Ryacophila are illustrated and described for the first time and published descriptions for several species are supplemented with additional characters. Larvae of two species are illustrated and described for the first time. Keys are given for identification of known females and larvae and of all males for the 35 eastern species of this genus. Cladistic analysis of the relationships among eastern Ryacophila species supports some of the conclusions reached by (Ross 1956) and (Schid 1970) and resolves the relationships among the species of the R. invaria Group.
