This report records the investigations and inspections of a steel lighthouse at Fort Jefferson National Memorial that occurred from September 30 - October 4, 1968, with additional inspections during October, November, and December, 1968. The report concluded that the structure was in no danger of immediate collapse; however, the level of deterioration necessitated immediate attention, especially if the structure was to be opened for visitor use. Alexander recommends three potential courses of action: 1. minimum repairs, keeping the upper levels of the structure closed to visitors; 2. in conjunction with option 1, replacing interior floords, ladders, wood works, and exterior handrails; 3. complete reconstruction of the facility using modern welding methods and high strength bolts, while holding to the basic historical structural plans. Included in the report are fourteen photos, the Project Construction Program Proposal, and technical drawings of the structure.
