This Title I report gives preservation and stabilization recommendations for various component structures of Fort Jefferson. The structures addressed are the scarp walls and embrasure openings, terreplein, parade wall, quarters, hot shot, large magazine, and small magazine. The primary concern is the scarp walls and embrasure openings, due to the continued exfoliation and oxidation of the iron in the embrasures. The terreplein is identified as a source of rainwater infiltration for the structure. Masonry joints throughout the structure have lost mortar and feature major cracks. The hot shot furnace continues to deteriorate due to ferrous metal in its construction. The report is granular in its analysis, giving a condition report for each of the 100+ embrasures. Detailed technical drawings of the site accompany the report.
