This report concerns the eight chimneys of Glenmont, Thomas Edison's mansion home. Of the eight chimneys, four are in current use: Chimney No. 1 (laundry stove), Chimney No. 2 (basement gas hot water heater and historic kitchen stove), Chimney No. 7 (coal-fired hot water boiler and fireplace of room reserved for occasional use of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edison), and Chimney No. 8 (coal-fired main heating boiler). The others provide flues for various open fireplaces in the house which are not in use. Rehabilitation of the Glenmont chimneys was identified as constituting a first and very important step in the overall restoration process. The completion of the chimney rehabilitation would allow the next major rehabilitation job to proceed, namely, replacement of the existing deteriorated slate and metal roof, gutters, and leaders.
