The purpose of this historic structure report is to record the history and existing conditions of, and to make recommendations for the preservation/restoration of, the swimming pool at Val-Kill. This structure is part of the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site (ELRO NHS), Hyde Park, New York. The present swimming pool, located southeast of and immediately adjacent to the stone cottage, is the second pool at Val-Kill. The report gives recommendations on both the swimming pool itself and the equipment room. The report suggests restoration of the swimming pool to involve the reinstallation of a diving board, and the introduction of a new filtration system. The original wooden diving board for the present pool, which is stored in the Garage-Stable, is splintered and in poor condition. It probably could be repaired in terms of appearance, but it. is unlikely that it could be used again as a diving board. Since the plan is to return the pool to "usable condition," a workable diving board would seem to be necessary. Thus, a new diving board of identical dimensions (13 feet, 10 inches long by 1 foot, 7 inches wide by 2 inches thick) should be made. If it is impossible to obtain a wooden board, a similar one of fiberglass might be considered. The original diving board should be cataloged and returned to storage.
