Fort Bowie was established on July 28, 1862, by 100 men of Company "G", 5th California Infantry under the command of Major T. A. Coult. From this time until the final surrender of Geronimo in 1886, Fort Bowie was the center of operations against the Chiricahua Apaches. From the original construction, nothing remains on the surface. The report recommends that a program of stabilization necessary to preserve the ruins and prevent further deterioration be instituted. The report also cites the site's ability to interpret the Apache side of the Indian Wars, as well as that of the army.
