This Historic Structures Preservation Guide for Fort Bowie National Historic Site has been prepared to assist the maintenance staff in the preservation of the remains of the structures and buildings which exist at the site. It is based upon the concept that the structures at Fort Bowie can be preserved through normal and systematic maintenance. This preservation guide continues to promote an approach of regular maintenance; maintenance which uses mud to protect the upper adobe walls; mud to fill small holes in adobes or mud mortar joints; and adobes made from the same mud to fill larger voids when that is necessary. The materials which will be used will generally be the same as the material in which the repair is made. Mud will be used for repair in mud, and lime plaster or mortar will be used for repair in stone foundations, lime plaster, lime grout masonry, and lime mortar. The Historic Structures Preservation Guide is organized to fulfill the need for periodic, systematic inspections, and to provide directions for the actual maintenance or repair when it becomes necessary. The basic components of the guide are the inspection forms themselves, two summary forms, and the specifications.
