Fort Caroline was built by French colonists in 1564. It is historically important as a French attempt to colonize land that would become part of the United States, as the scene of the first decisive conflict in America between European powers, and as the stimulus which caused permanent settlement of the continent by Europeans. This report evaluates the descriptive information in the historical records in order to determine whether a reconstruction of Fort Caroline can be done with reasonable accuracy. The report concludes that such a reconstruction would be about 90 percent conjectural, as no reliable dimensional data for any part of the structure is available except the height of the earthwork and the size of the parade ground.
