This report concerns the Enlisted Men's Barracks (HB-20) of the Fort Davis National Memorial. In operation from 1854-1891, Fort Davis serves as one of the greatest examples of a typical frontier military outpost of the U.S. military in the 19th century. HB-20 was constructed in 1867 after the United State military's reoccupation of the fort. Three adobe structures under a single shingle roof, HB-20 was the first of two barracks built at the Fort. Building construction consisted of stone foundations, adobe walls, wood floors, wood ceiling joists and roof rafters, and redwood shingle roofing. The proposed construction activity will restore the exterior of the building to its original appearance while remodeling the interior to adapt it to contemporary use as a Visitor Center. The South Squad Room and Orderly Room will contain the administrative offices; the North Squad Room, a lobby and museum; the Dining and Kitchen Wing, an audio-visual room and work room. Mechanical equipment and plumbing facilities will be located in the former storage area.
