This report concerns the Cavalry Corrals (HB-41) of the Fort Davis National Memorial. In operation from 1854-1891, Fort Davis serves as one of the greatest examples of a typical frontier military outpost of the U.S. military in the 19th century. HB-41 was constructed by 1869 after the United State military's reoccupation of the fort. The report proposes that the complex of the Cavalry Corrals, HB-41, will constitute a prime exhibit of the magnitude and complexity of maintaining livestock in constant readiness and in vigorous health during the historic period of the Indian wars and westward expansion when horse mounted cavalry held sway. The exhibit will assist in comprehending the feeding, grooming and husbandry of cavalry mounts as well as the care and maintenance of saddles and other military gear essential to mounted cavalry troops on the western frontier.
