This architectural supplement is an unfinished report and covers only the research concluded up to the end of the duty period, September, 13, 1963. The evidence uncovered during the final ten days of the working period indicated that there were several distinct stages of construction occurring fairly early in the life of the building, beginning with a one-story unit. These facts, together with concurrent discovery of written description of the Hotel as "a one-story affair" introduces possibilities that were unanticipated by the comprehensive Historic Structures Report, Part I, by Bearss, and could affect the recommendations for restoration. The principal question to be answered is this: how many stories was the Dover Hotel in February, 1862? The nature of the building site encourages ambiguity, for the existing building is two stories high on the street or east side, but on the north and west it may be seen as three. This report does not reach a conclusion on the principal question.
