Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This report is on the stabilization needs at Fort Laramie, focusing on The Sutler's Store and the Non-Commissioned Officers' Barracks. The report finds the Sutler's Store in "deplorable shape," due to the rise of capillary moisture through the adobe and lime-grout walls. The report concludes that there should be no particularly difficult problems encountered in stabilizing the interior, but the exterior stabilization process will require considerable time and skill to accomplish.
