Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This document consists of two related reports: Survey Report: Stabilization and Limited Restoration of the New Guardhouse and its addendum. The addendum is presented first, as it supersedes the basic report. The original survey report investigated the Guardhouse at Fort Laramie, during which an older set of foundations were discovered. The addendum suggests that the foundations be stabilized and developed as a permanent exhibit.
