Historic Structures Report, Part I: Comprehensive Stabilization of Administration Building Ruin (Bldg. 75)

1966. Historic Structures Report, Part I: Comprehensive Stabilization of Administration Building Ruin (Bldg. 75). Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This report describes the process to structurally reinforce and stabilize the ruins of the Administration Building (Bldg. 75) at Fort Laramie, to preserve the lime-grout walls as standing ruins, and permit safe access and observation by visitors. The report suggests that the ruined building would not be staffed, but would be used as interpretive talking point.
