Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This memorandum is a progress report on the rehabilitation work performed on the Officers' Quarters F (Bldg. 57) during the 1954-1955 period. The primary defect identified in the building was identified by the sloping of the floors of the main section toward center and the attendant distortion of doorways and cracking of plaster. A new foundation was laid, the interior was re-plastered, and most of the interior wood work was refinished, among other work. At the end of the work period, the building was determined to be ready to be refurnished in whole or part as a Lieutenant Colonel's quarters of the period 1885-1890. The report also includes photographs of the process.
