Survey Report: Stabilization of the Sawmill (Bldg. 154)
Ringenbach RB, Petty WJ, Gann RH. 1960. Survey Report: Stabilization of the Sawmill (Bldg. 154). Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This report concerns the ruins of the Sawmill (building no. 154) at Fort Laramie, a lime-concrete structure constructed in 1887. The report proposes to stabilize the remains of the structure with no restoration. Its retention by stabilization will insure that its portion of the area historic story can be given to the public, and provide physical evidence as an exhibit.
