Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This report concerns the ruins of the New Bakery (building no. 115) at Fort Laramie. Constructed in 1885, the New Bakery is intended to retained as ruins, providing interpretation of the succession of bakehouses emphasizing the point that Fort Laramie was not a static, short duration Army Post.
