Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This memorandum concerns the restoration work performed on the Magazine (building no. 11) at Fort Laramie in 1954. The Magazine is slated to be restored to its 1850-1862 appearance, contrary to the general 1888-1890 period of significance for the rest of the site. The report proposes that the structure is to house a small interpretive panel containing excerpts from historic letters, data on the storage of ordnance materials, and pictures of the building prior to restoration.
