Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. The guide document is a systematic review of the historic buildings at Fort Laramie. The purpose of the HSPG is to establish cyclic maintenance procedures for the maintenance staff at Fort Laramie National Historic Site and to advise the Regional Historical Architect concerning repair and replacement procedures. The information is provided to reduce material deterioration and to prolong the life of the historic fabric and structure.
