Between 1822 and 1880, the Santa Fe Trail provided one of the most important overland transportation routes in America. The great influx of people along the Santa Fe Trail disrupted the Native Americans' way of life and prompted them to retaliate. Fort Larned was established as a temporary fort in 1860 to protect travelers, trail commerce, and the mail because of the rising tensions between American Indians and those using the trail. Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves the buildings, stories, and historical themes associated with Fort Larned. This report is the historical data section of the Historic Structures Report, Part II for the Company Quarters (HB-1 and HB-2) at Fort Larned. Constructed in 1867, the quarters were simple one-story rectangular structures of sandstone covered by shingled roofs, designed to employ regional materials to satisfy immediate need. A comparison of the early photographs with other documentary evidence with the structures as they exist today show the following major alterations: removal of fireplaces and partitions, removal of wooden floor and pouring of concrete, removal of original roof and portion of stone gables, and alteration of various windows and stone work. The buildings are intended to be restored to their appearance as of 1868.
