Constructed by the Spanish in 1742, Fort Matanzas was built to protect St. Augustine by guarding the Matanzas Inlet. The coquina masonry Fort has served Spanish, British, and American military interests in Florida. This report gives recommendations for the restoration of Fort Matanzas. Written just three years after the beginning of the National Park Service's custodianship of the site, the report recommends that extensive restoration not be performed, but that certain parts should be repaired or afforded protection to prevent further destruction, a means of access should be provided throughout, and a bulkhead built entirely around the Fort for protection against erosion. The report also includes high-quality present condition photographs.
