Constructed between 1798 and 1800, Fort McHenry is a bastioned pentagon fort built to defend the Baltimore Harbor. In the War of 1812, the Fort withstood British bombardment during the Battle of Baltimore, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner, national anthem of the United States. The Fort would later serve as a military prison during the Civil War, army hospital in World War I, and Coast Guard base in World War II. The scope of work for this project includes replacement of damaged and defective system for distributing electricity from transformer room to historic Star Fort buildings, and upgrading electrical wiring within these buildings to meet code requirements. A major portion of the current electrical system dates from its 1929-32 installation by the Army. The original electrical system design was never intended to carry the heavy load that has been imposed on it by today's electrical demands. As a result, the park must constantly monitor its electrical usage or suffer frequent power outages. Operation around the current electrical system in this manner is both inefficient and can result in life safety problems.
