The battle at Fort Necessity in the summer of 1754 was the opening action of the French and Indian War. This war was a clash of British, French and American Indian cultures. It ended with the removal of French power from North America, setting the stage for the American Revolution. This report on Fort Necessity was prepared to determine, as close as possible, the ground features of the Great Meadows at the time of the 1754 engagement. Emphasis has been placed on the nature of the original land cover, the estimated proximity of the woodland, and how subsequent changes have altered the wilderness character of the historical scene.
