The battle at Fort Necessity in the summer of 1754 was the opening action of the French and Indian War. This war was a clash of British, French and American Indian cultures. It ended with the removal of French power from North America, setting the stage for the American Revolution. This document consists of memoranda providing justification for the restoration of the Fort at Fort Necessity, as well as a progress report on archeological investigations at the Fort. Archeological work was carried out over a five week period from March 30 through May 1. The primary objective at the start of the explorations was to check the thesis that the original stockade was a small, circular structure, and that the reconstructed stockade is located approximately on the line of the entrenchments, or outer breastworks. The explorations bore out this thesis in every respect.
