Fort Point is a masonry seacoast fortification constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer in 1853, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The Fort was built in the Army's traditional "Third System" style of military architecture (a standard adopted in the 1820s), and would be the only fortification of this design constructed west of the Mississippi River. Several samples of the railing from Fort Point were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy. and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. This was done in order to evaluate the cause of the failure of the paint on these galvanized steel railings. These railings were painted during 1975-76 and all the coats were applied during this period. A conversion coat was not used.
