Fort Raleigh National Historic Site protects and preserves known portions of England's first New World settlements from 1584 to 1590. This site also preserves the cultural heritage of the Native Americans, European Americans and African Americans who have lived on Roanoke Island. This report describes very briefly the work carried on during the 1950 season at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. A comprehensive report covering the entire archeological project (1947, 1948, and 1950) is to be prepared at a later date. Previous explorations had located and identified the fort remains as the Ralph Lane fort of 1585. The objectives this year were: (a) to completely excavate the remainder of the fort site; and (b) to reconstruct the fort and stabilize it as a field exhibit.
