The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia maintains the Shenandoah Watershed Study (SWAS) program in cooperation with Shenandoah National Park (SHEN). Over the 39+ -year period, 1979-2018, the SWAS program has developed and maintained a monitoring framework designed to account for the spatial and temporal variability of hydrologic and biogeochemical conditions in the watershed ecosystems of the Shenandoah National Park. The SWAS monitoring program is a component of the SHEN Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program. The SWAS framework includes 15 primary study watersheds in SHEN.
