Historic Structures Preservation Guide: Reconstruction – Phase 1

Koue AL and Slama MA. 1978. Historic Structures Preservation Guide: Reconstruction – Phase 1. Historic Structure Management Plan. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

Located on the north bank of the Columbia River, in sight of snowy mountain peaks and a vibrant urban landscape, this park has a rich cultural past. From a frontier fur trading post, to a powerful military legacy, the magic of flight, and the origin of the American Pacific Northwest, history is shared at four unique sites composing the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The purpose of this Historic Structures Preservation Guide is to serve as a reference document tailored to the specific needs of the reconstruction of the Palisades, Bastion and Bakery, erected under Phase 1, from which the park management can obtain guidance and information for continuing normal maintenance and repairs. This guide is intended to provide the following: A. Document new historical, archaeological and architectural data developed during or learned after the Historic Resource Study or Historic Structure Reports. B. Include all as-constructed documents such as drawings, specifications and information on change orders which were required to carry out the projects. C. Detailed Specifications for expendable items such as roof coverings, wood, timber and other items in order that they may be replaced in material, design or texture as originally provided. D. Formulas and specifications for material, finishes and repair for such items not usually available in the normal market. E. Contain a schedule of paint colors related to a color standard and a suggested program for paint maintenance and repainting including·formulas and application information where special materials, textures or finishes are required. F. Include manufacturers recommendations when available. G. Information on structural, mechanical and electric systems including operations and instructions for maintenance. H. Include a directory of all parties involved in the reconstruction project including contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, agencies and consultants. I. Guide specifications for periodic housekeeping and maintenance. J. Forms for maintenance inspections, cost estimates and documentation. K. Make recommendations for the future development of Fort Vancouver.
