Albert Gallatin is best remembered for his thirteen year tenure as Secretary of the Treasury during the Jefferson and Madison administrations. In that time he reduced the national debt, purchased the Louisiana Territory and funded the Lewis & Clark exploration. Gallatin's accomplishments and contributions are highlighted at Friendship Hill, his restored country estate. The scope of this report was to study and make recommendations regarding man-made (cultural) landscape features in the historic core of the park. Field work at the park proceeded from October 25–November 4, 1989. During that visit, Harrison and Van Dyke interviewed park staff, reviewed historical information in the park archives, and walked and photographed the site. The excerpts from Gallatin' s manuscripts, and historical photographs, maps, and plans in the park archives were of particular value.
