White Sands National Monument Bird Checklist (Interactive)

Chihuahuan Desert Network. 2019. White Sands National Monument Bird Checklist (Interactive)

Much of the dunefield in White Sands National Monument presents a challenging environment for birds as an active dune system provides little habitat for them. However, the margins of the dunefield and the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert provide excellent habitat for a great diversity of bird life. Lake Lucero, an ephemeral lake (or playa) that is intermittently filled with shallow water, presents shorebirds and waterfowl with excellent habitat. While birds may be scare in some areas, the monument as a whole contains an abundance of bird life and diversity, with 246 species documented within its boundaries.
