Fort Hancock is part of the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area. On the entire peninsula of Sandy Hook, there are approximately 300 structures reflecting Light House Board, Lifesaving Service, and United States Army activity from 1764 through the 1970s. These structures are of varying levels of historic and architectural significance. This Historic Structure Assessment Report surveys the Barracks (Bldg. 23) at Fort Hancock, providing photographs, floor plans, statements of deficiency, and preservation recommendations. Building #23 is one of an ensemble of buildings constructed to accommodate soldiers assigned to the Sandy Hook defenses from the 1890s through World War II. The building was designed as a barracks for 70 enlisted men.
