Fort Hancock is part of the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area. On the entire peninsula of Sandy Hook, there are approximately 300 structures reflecting Light House Board, Lifesaving Service, and United States Army activity from 1764 through the 1970s. These structures are of varying levels of historic and architectural significance. This Historic Structure Assessment Report surveys the Firehouse #2 (Bldg. 76) at Fort Hancock, providing photographs, floor plans, statements of deficiency, and preservation recommendations. Since Firehouse #1 was inconveniently located and too small for long ladders, a new firehouse was needed. On Jan. 1, 1911, Firehouse #2 was accepted and put into use.
