The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address". The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. The Bryan farm buildings are located on Cemetery Ridge at the southern end or Ziegler's Grove, or about 300 yards north of The Angle. The buildings were in the line of artillery and infantry fire during Pickett's Charge on the afternoon of July 3, the last attack of the three day's Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 2 and 3, 1863. The restoration of the Bryan house is proposed primarily as a measure to reconstruct the wartime appearance of the house. The problem of maintaining an attractive house and yard, however, can be accomplished best by a suitable tenant. The existing house is in poor condition and would require extensive repair in order to render it suitable for living quarters. It is felt, therefore, that as it would be necessary to expend considerable funds in reconditioning the existing house, it is the proper time to accomplish the restoration of the original house.
