The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address". The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. This report was commissioned as the first part of a two-phase project to stabilize the Trostle Barn at Gettysburg National Military Park. It includes a survey of the site, a geotechnical evaluation of the subsurface conditions, a survey of the existing condition of the building, identification of areas of current structural distress, a structural analysis of critical members, identification of areas of weakness or potential failure, and proposals for stabilizing the building. This report, after review and approval by the National Park Service, will form the basis for the production of drawings and specifications for the stabilization of the barn.
