Archaeological Inventory and Assessment of the East Fork Charley River, Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve: Results from the 2017 Field Season

From June 6 to 16, 2017, a team of five National Park Service archaeologists completed intensive evaluation and testing of archaeological sites in the southeast section of Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. This project aimed to evaluate the significance of previously recorded Northern Archaic sites located on glacial landforms north of the East Fork Charley River and to collect data for Determinations of Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. Over the course of eight days, the crew intensively surveyed 21 previously recorded sites within 3.4 km of a base camp established on the north bank of the East Fork Charley River. On the final two days of field work, the crew recorded six new sites during pedestrian survey 1 km northeast of camp and helicopter-assisted survey 4 km north of camp. The sites documented during the 2017 field season were in good or fair condition and ranged from localized surface scatters of a few flakes to extensive surface and subsurface multi-scatter sites with hundreds of pieces of debitage and formal lithic tools. This report summarizes the results of the 2017 field work in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and provides recommendations for future work in the East Fork Charley River area.
