Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for hundreds of miles, from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. This report provides a final summation for a multiyear archaeological ruins stabilization effort completed by Nickens and Associates' personnel at the National Park Service's Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, located along the Colorado River drainage in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. This work was undertaken between 1983 and 1988 under provisions of National Park Service Contract No. CX-1200-3-A074. The primary goal of the program was to provide for protection and preservation of several of the numerous prehistoric and historic ruins found in the recreation area. Achievement of this goal was accomplished through a variety of tasks: 1) comprehensive structural stabilization of a number of deteriorating sites; 2) completion of stabilization assessments; 3) monitoring of ongoing impacts at stabilized ruins; and 4) completion of a stabilization plan for the recreation area. In sum, the ruins stabilization program conducted by Nickens and Associates under contract to the National Park Service has proven that ruins stabilization can be more than simply a technical or mechanical undertaking. Data collection and analysis conducted in conjunction with the actual physical repair of deteriorating sites have produced explanatory results, thus furthering our understanding of the occupation and use of Glen Canyon by the prehistoric Anasazi.
