Field Methods: I will collect tail tissue for DNA analysis from all species of the P. jordani and P. glutinosus groups. Salamanders will be found by looking under cover objects, including rocks, logs, and bark piles. Salamanders are to be captured by hand and held briefly in clean plastic bags. I will measure and photograph each salamander. I will remove tail tips (5-10mm) by pinching through the bag, stimulating the natural tail autotomy mechanism. I will then immediately release the salamander at the point of capture.
