The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site preserves Springwood, the birthplace, lifelong home, and burial site of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This report documents the history of the duplex at the site, tracking its various uses and alterations from the Roosevelt Era through the National Park Service Era. Originally published in 1965, this report includes an addendum from February 1970, documenting the alterations made to the site in the intervening years. The duplex was built by James Roosevelt, father of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although not usually seen by public visitors, it illustrates the manner in which the family realized their responsibility to their employees. The house was built to house two families of the employees of Roosevelt. It was likely built in 1884 if not earlier. The NPS assumed responsibility of the property in 1945 and employees resided in the duplex.
