Historic Structures Report, Part III: Tenant House #1 (Bldg. 19), APW Repairs

Hopewell Furnace showcases an early American industrial landscape from natural resource extraction to enlightened conservation. Operating from 1771-1883, Hopewell and other "iron plantations" laid the foundation for the transformation of the United States into an industrial giant. The park's 848 acres and historic structures illustrate the business, technology and lifestyle of our growing nation. This report details preservation work performed on the Tenant House No. 1 (Bldg. 19) at the Hopewell Furnace site. Tenant House #1 (Building #19) is a two story four room dwelling located just across French Creek from Hopewell Furnace on the west side of the historic Birdsboro-Warwick Road. An amount of $10,000 was made available to effect deferred maintenance work in Tenant Houses #1 and #2 and the Boarding House in November, 1962. This appropriation was made under the Accelerated Public Works program. The funds had to be exhausted with no overruns by June 30, 1963, As a result, there was no time to go through the regular procedures of the Historic Structures Reports on the buildings and since none of the funds were available for overhead or P.S.&S. costs it was not possible to request the Eastern Office of Design and Construction for assistance. After discussion with the Regional Chief of Maintenance who looked over the buildings, it was decided not to attempt any restoration work but to keep strictly to repairs or replacements of the deteriorated building components. This report details the repairs made through textual description accompanied by photographs.
