Independence National Historical Park preserves sites associated with the American Revolution and the nation's founding history in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This historic structures report concerns the First Bank of the United States. The bank opened for business in Carpenter's Hall, December 1791 and remained there until July 24, 1797 when the new building on Third Street was completed. Few major changes have been made to the exterior of the structure in the past 167 years. The classic facade remains essentially the same as it was in 1797. The interior, however, was completely altered in 1901. The proposed work on the First Bank will be confined to the restoration of the exterior to its original appearance.
