Independence National Historical Park preserves sites associated with the American Revolution and the nation's founding history in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This report concerns Carpenters' Hall, the site of the First Continental Congress. The report contends that, though Carpenters’ Hall is widely famous as an historic building, its physical fabric does not seem to be well understood. In this essay the writer has attempted to trace structural evolution as completely as a limited amount of research would allow. To that end an effort was made to ascertain the nature of the building's occupancy in all periods. Notes and transcriptions were made at Philadelphia in the summer of 1947 from various published sources as well as the manuscript records of the Carpenters’ Company,
