Alcatraz Island has been a major visitor attraction since the National Park Service began guided tours in 1973. Tours of the prison and military fortifications are among the most popular of all tours in San Francisco. While public access is presently restricted to the tour route, the high volume of present and projected (less restricted) visitation combined with the deteriorated condition of most of the structures on the Island have made an evaluation of the structural and safety hazards mandatory. This report outlines the general structural conditions and safety hazards on the Island based upon visual inspection, review of the available detailed structural information, and the knowledge of the National Park Service staff. Recommendations for improvements, and necessary further studies are made together with a probable range of costs for the recommended work. A distinction is made between temporary, immediate actions that can be taken to make an area safe for public access, and more extensive analyses and structural improvements for preservation or public use.
