This historic structure report concerns the Quartermaster Storehouse, Ordnance Storehouse, and Artillery Engineering Storehouse at Fort Barry in Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This is a complex of three wooden frame structures constructed and completed in the spring of 1907 as part of the original post structures of Fort Barry. Identical detailing and construction materials are used throughout. Similar roof pitch and window placement help define the character of the complex. The historic character of the complex does not rely on the richness of design and detail, but rather is defined by the sparcity of these aspects. These are utilitarian military structures constructed from standard plans. The structures have deteriorated to some extent, due for the most part to vandalism and neglect. However, deterioration in these structures is mostly cosmetic and does not involve major preservation work. Specific areas for repair work are listed under the significance factors above. Items listed are of a preservation maintenance nature and should not be considered as restoration or reconstruction. The general good condition of the structures and the fact that the exteriors have not been significantly changed through the years makes preservation an acceptable treatment. Restoration or especially reconstruction is not desirable or even needed. Rehabilitating and preserving the structures as they exist will maintain the qualities that are historically significant within the structures.
