This document collects historical information about the Locomotive No. 60, "Jupiter," which was used by Central Pacific to haul officials and guests to the golden spike driving ceremony at Promontory, Utah, May 10, 1869. It was one of sixteen engines of identical design, built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works, Schenectady, N.Y., during 1868 and 1869. These engines were a standard design of that builder, and were supplied to many other railroads be sides the Central Pacific, especially the Union Pacific and the Chicago & Alton. As Schenectady was a relative newcomer in the field of locomotive building in the late 1860s, pulslished drawings in textbooks of that era do not exist, these books being devoted to the better known builders such as Rogers, Danforth, Grant and Baldwin. As a result, no drawings of the Jupiter have been located, either in the files of the Southern Pacific at their Sacramento Shops, or elsewhere.
