The Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins complex is a contributor to the Grand Canyon Village Historic District. Not yet fifty years old, it was not included as a contributor to the original Grand Canyon Village National Register Historic District when it was designated in 1975. In 1982, the nomination was revised to include the Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins, which were noted as being regionally significant. Xanterra intends to rehabilitate the Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins in 2006. This HSR is intended to provide the necessary historical and architectural background before this rehabilitation begins. The Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins Historic Structure Report provides the following prehistoric and historic property and building information: pre-historic and historic contexts; construction chronology and developmental history; site, building and materials descriptions, existing conditions and summary of alterations; character-defining features and spaces; recommended treatments for the site, buildings and materials; structural engineering data; and mechanical engineering. The Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins are generally in good condition despite their age and location in an area characterized for much of the year by extreme temperature variations, prolonged sun exposure and heavy snow loads. This complex is also subject to the excessive demands of the thousands of visitors who trundle through the complex every day of the year. The fact that the site and buildings arc in as good shape as they are is a testament to the generally good maintenance practiced by the concessionaire. However, the Bright Angel Lodge complex is in need of a substantial amount of work in order to allow it to continue functioning effectively in its capacity as a visitor center.
