This standard operating procedure (SOP) provides instruction for how to collect and record species richness and measures of abundance (frequency, cover class, and sapling tallies) for seedling/sapling data in South Florida/Caribbean Network (SFCN) parks. These data are used to produce species diversity measures for analyses. Vascular plant composition and abundance data are collected using 20 × 20 meter (65.6 × 65.6 feet [ft]) plots in natural and semi-natural forest habitats. Collectively, these data describe the current condition of focal forest communities and their responses to key stressors. This is accomplished using metrics of species richness, per-species frequency, and per-species cover. Data on seedling and sapling abundance provide information on advance regeneration and future seral stage development of the forest community. The datasheets used for this SOP include SFCN Veg Form 5—Species Diversity (3 datasheets) and Veg Form 6—Seedling/Sapling Measurements (2 datasheets). They are included in Appendix A of this SOP.
