This report presents the results of the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) mapping project at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The survey was conducted by the staff of the Cultural Resources Geographic Information Systems Facility (CRGIS) of the National Park Service together with the Southeast Regional Office and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Headquarters Office. Cultural and Historic Resources were surveyed October 30-November 5, 1993 and December 5-16, 1993. The goal of this survey was to construct a database of historic stonemasonry structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Bureau of Public Roads, and others between 1933 and 1942. This information in tum will help the Southeast Regional Office compile data for the List of Classified Structures and the Cultural Landscape Inventory. Few national parks have a comprehensive inventory of stonemasonry structures associated with the development of the road system. Such an inventory, enables the park resource manager to more clearly understand the importance of these resources. Mapping these structures makes an inventory available to the park manager, planner, and maintenance staff. It also allows visualization of correlations between resources and aids in the interpretive and protective missions of the park. These resources reflect the contributions of the National Park Service to a national style of naturalistic landscape design in the 20th century.
